Dr. Matthew Durschlag, a board-certified orthodontist and owner of San Diego Smile Pros, is taking patient care to new heights by incorporating cutting-edge digital workflows and 3D printing into his practice. His commitment to staying at the forefront of orthodontic advancements allows him to provide precision treatment that achieves better results more quickly and conveniently.

One of the key advantages of digital workflows is the streamlined treatment process. Using state-of-the-art digital scanning, a team member captures highly accurate, 3D images of a patient’s teeth and gums. This eliminates the need for uncomfortable, goopy impressions, creating a more pleasant experience for patients, especially those with a sensitive gag reflex.

The scans are converted into a 3D model of the patient’s mouth. Whether it’s phase 1 treatment for a child, braces for a teenager or Invisalign® for an adult, Dr. Durschlag is able to plan the treatment digitally in advance. He can direct movements as small as fractions of a millimeter on individual teeth and bites. This allows for simulation of different outcomes, troubleshooting potential issues in advance, and fine tuning of every detail for maximum aesthetics, bite function, and oral health.

Dr. Durschlag’s progressive approach also includes the use of an in-office 3D printer. The printer translates the virtual 3D model of the patient’s mouth into a printed model. The model is placed in a vacuum forming machine to create high quality appliances, including clear retainers, aligners, and whitening trays. Patients get a faster turnaround time and appliances that fit perfectly.

This level of customization achieves better outcomes in less time and with fewer office visits. This is one of the reasons Dr. Durschlag is known for treating active duty military and people who are on the go. Regardless of a patient’s orthodontic concerns or schedule, San Diego Smile Pros has solutions.
